Maths
During the children’s mathematical years at school they will be learning 3 strands: - Space, Measurement and Number.
As children learn differently it is important to give children the foundation on which teaching and learning experiences should start.
Developing a positive attitude towards Mathematics will assist in their learning. Believe it or not children are continually participating in mathematical concepts through games, cooking, measuring, counting, estimating and building. As parents/teachers it is our role to continue to develop our children’s learning through these wonderful experiences.
Encourage your children to play games that rely on special skills:
- Jigsaws
- Tangrams
- Chess
- Cards
- Noughts and crosses
Puzzles and strategy games also develop problem-solving, spatial and organisation skills.

Involving your children in real mathematical experiences at home will continue to enhance their concept development:
- Cooking – measuring the ingredients
- Looking for patterns
- Counting out change/playing with money
- Estimating number related activities
- Making models and assembling kits
Don’t forget to praise children when they have a go!
The educational resources listed on this website will help develop your child’s mathematical skills through language, talking, listening and reading.
